Frequently Asked Questions on Senior Secondary Mathematics Curriculum

 1.      Are the Compulsory Part, Module 1 (Calculus and Statistics) and Module 2 (Algebra and Calculus) of the Senior Secondary Mathematics Curriculum (SSMC) considered as separate subjects in the senior secondary academic structure?

There is only one single Mathematics subject in the senior secondary academic structure. The Compulsory Part, Module 1 and Module 2 are NOT separate subjects. The inclusion of Module 1 and Module 2 of the Extended Part in the SSMC is to provide more flexibility and diversity to cater for students who have different needs, interests and orientations.

 2. In the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSE), will candidates be allowed to enter the Compulsory Part and a module of the Extended Part in different languages (for example, to enter the Compulsory Part in English and a module of the Extended Part in Chinese)?

As Module 1 (Calculus and Statistics) and Module 2 (Algebra and Calculus) are only modules in the Extended Part of the single subject Mathematics in the SS academic structure, students will only be allowed to enter, in the same examination, the Compulsory Part and a module in the same language.

 3. How will the Compulsory Part and the two modules be reported in the HKDSE? Will there be a single combined level awarded to students taking the Compulsory Part with a module of the Extended Part in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSE)?

The levels awarded to the Compulsory Part and the two modules will be reported separately. There will NOT be a combined level awarded to students taking the Compulsory Part with a module of the Extended Part.

 4.

How do University Grants Committee(UGC) - funded Institutions consider the two modules of the Extended Part in their entrance requirements?

In addition to the general entrance requirements of individual UGC-funded institutions, institutions may set specific faculty/programme requirements for the two modules of the Extended Part. For details of these requirements, please refer to:
