Recruitment for Primary NET

 

Recruitment of Native-speaking English Teachers (NETs)
for Primary Schools

 

(Salary Range: HK$19,835 to 40,290 per month)

 

On behalf of the primary schools in Hong Kong, the Education Bureau cordially invites you to apply for the Native-speaking English Teacher (NET) positions.

 

ROLE


NETs are required to teach English as a second language to Chinese students and assist in teacher and curriculum development in Government and Government-subvented primary schools (for students aged between 6 and 11) and schools for students with special educational needs.

 

QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT

 

The applicant should be a native-speaker of English (meaning English being the person’s native language) or possess native-speaker English competence.

 

Preference will be given to applicants with experience in teaching English as a second/foreign language.

 

For appointment in special schools, preference will be given to applicants who have special education training and/or experience in teaching students with special education needs.

 

Appointment of NETs should be considered according to the following order of priority:

 

Category 1 (to be appointed at Assistant Primary School Master/Mistress (APSM) rank, MPS pt. 17-29)

(i)      a bachelor’s degree in English (i.e. majoring in English Language or English Literature or English Studies or Linguistics# or a Modern Language#) from a Hong Kong university or equivalent; and

(ii)      a recognized teacher training qualification in primary education; and

(iii)    a Teaching of English as Foreign Language or a Second Language (TEFL/TESL) qualification at least at certificate level, or an equivalent course of study recognised by EDB*. 

 

Category 2 (to be appointed at APSM rank, MPS pt. 17-29)

(i)      a bachelor’s degree in any subject from a Hong Kong University or equivalent; and

(ii)      a recognized teacher training qualification in primary education; and

(iii)    a TEFL/TESL qualification at least at certificate level, or an equivalent course of study recognised by EDB*. 

 

In the event that sufficient number of candidates meeting the requirements in Category 1 & 2 cannot be recruited, consideration may be given to appoint teachers with the following qualifications:

 

Category 3 (to be appointed at APSM rank, MPS pt. 17-29)

(i)     a bachelor’s degree in any subject from a Hong Kong University or equivalent; and

(ii)     a recognized teacher training qualification; and

(iii)   a TEFL/TESL qualification at least at certificate level, or an equivalent course of study recognised by EDB*. 

 

Category 4 (to be appointed at APSM rank, MPS pt. 17-29, with salary bar at MPS Point 22)

(i)      a bachelor’s degree in any subject from a Hong Kong University or equivalent; and

(ii)    a TEFL/TESL qualification at least at certificate level, or an equivalent course of study recognised by EDB*. 

 

Category 5 (to be appointed at Certificated Master/Mistress (CM) rank, MPS pt. 14-24)

(i)      a recognized teacher’s certificate obtained after at least 2 years’ full-time study or equivalent; and

(ii)    a TEFL/TESL qualification at least at certificate level, or an equivalent course of study recognised by EDB*. 

 

Note:

 

Candidates who are considered for appointment but possess non-local qualifications, the qualifications will be assessed by the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic & Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ). If their quailifications are assessed by HKCAAVQ as comparable to a local bachelor's degree, their qualifications will normally be considered equivalent to a bachelor's degree from a Hong Kong University. The Government reserves the right to make the final decision as to whether the qualifications of a candidate are equivalent to a bahelor's degree from a Hong Kong University.

 

# A degree in Linguistics or Modern Languages should be one in which English is the major language studies.

 

* For example, a Post-graduate Diploma in Education majoring in English.

 

TERMS OF APPOINTMENT & SALARY

 

* The appointment will be on a two-year contract from 16 August 2010 to 15 August 2012, subject to renewal after expiry.

 

* The salary scale of APSM is from around HK$22,985 to HK$40,290 (*approx. US$2,946 to 5,165) per month (12 months a year).  Candidates with a Post-graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) or equivalent (not TEFL/TESL) qualifications will enter at HK$25,320 (approx. *US$3,246) per month.  Those without a local recognized teacher training qualification or equivalent will not be permitted to proceed beyond a salary bar which is at present set at HK$29,235 (approx. *US$3,748) per month.

 

* 15% gratuity will be granted if your performance and conduct during the period of service have been satisfactory.

 

* NETs, who have served two years of continuous service and are in the third and fourth years of continuous service, are eligible to apply for receiving a retention incentive at 5% of current base salary, on top of their current base salary for the third and fourth years of service. The incentive is not payable for the first two years' of continuous service. NETs, who have served four years of continuous service and are in the fifth year of service onwards, are eligible to apply for a retention incentive at 10% of current base salary, on top of their current base salary for the fifth year of service onwards.

 

* Passage, baggage and medical allowances and a special allowance of HK$14,245 (*approx. US$1,826) per month are provided for appointees whose normal place of residence is outside Hong Kong.  (A NET will not be eligible for the special allowance if his/her normal place of residence is not outside Hong Kong or his/her spouse is currently receiving the same allowance or any housing benefit from his/her own employer.)

 

* The salary and the conditions of service to be offered are subject to the candidate's qualifications and post-qualification teaching experience and the prevailing conditions at the time the offer of appointment is made.


* Based on exchange rate HK$7.8 = US$1 (subject to fluctuation).
