Subjects under the Eight Key Learning Areas

 

(2020/21 School Year)

 


1
Technology Education Key Learning Area Curriculum is fully implemented at the junior secondary level in the 2016/17 school year. It covers six knowledge contexts, namely "Information and Communication Technology", "Materials and Structures", "Operations and Manufacturing", "Strategies and Management", "Systems and Control", and "Technology and Living". Modular approach is proposed in the implementation of the curriculum.

 

2 Schools should offer Chinese History as an independent compulsory subject at the junior secondary level from the 2018/19 school year. All secondary schools should allocate 25% of the total lesson time for the PSHE KLA curriculum, or about 5% of the total lesson time for the JS level, or about two lessons per week, to the study of Chinese History under the PSHE KLA at the JS level.

 

3 Life and Society (2010) has integrated and updated the learning contents of Economic and Public Affairs (EPA) (1997) and Social Studies (1997) as well as those of civic education. It replaces EPA, Social Studies and Civic Education (1998) to provide updated learning contents on Strands 1, 5 and 6 for junior secondary students.

 

4 The Senior Secondary Curriculum implemented in September 2009 is made up of 3 components, namely, Core Subjects, Elective Subjects (including SS subjects, Applied Learning courses and Other Languages) and Other Learning Experiences (i.e. Moral and Civic Education, Community Service, Aesthetic Development, Physical Development and Career-related Experiences).


  • Students may choose 1 to 2 Applied Learning (ApL) course(s) as elective subject(s) starting from Secondary 4 or Secondary 5 according to their interests, aspirations and aptitudes. There are six areas of studies in the ApL curriculum, namely: Creative Studies, Media and Communication, Business, Management and Law, Services, Applied Science, and Engineering and Production. In each cohort, there are about 40 ApL courses, including Applied Learning (Vocational English) and Applied Learning Chinese (for non-Chinese speaking students).
  • Other Languages There are six Other Languages namely, French, German, Hindi, Japanese, Spanish and Urdu. Students can take other languages as their elective subjects. The programmes of these languages must follow the curriculum and examinations pitched at AS-level offered by the Cambridge Assessment International Education and administered by the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority.

5 Liberal Studies should only be offered at the senior secondary level.
