A visual representation of "fence" by Eddie Tay

YIU Hei Ching Claudia

This is a watercolour painting based on the poem ‘fence’ by Eddie Tay. The poem presents people’s optimistic view of life while they are striving to achieve their aims and ambitions. There are barriers along the way, but people still work hard to pursue their goals.

The skyscrapers in the artwork signify one’s ambitions and dreams, as well as what one aims to achieve in life, while the red carpet represents the path to accomplishments. The flowers symbolise how much an individual hopes to bloom and thrive in life. The most important component, the fence, embodies the obstacles and challenges one may face while pursuing their dreams.

Fortunately, a fence is usually modest in height and contains holes, which allows people to look through or even climb over it. Hence, I would like to convey the message that the road to success is undoubtedly tough and challenges are unavoidable, but as long as you are willing to work hard, you will be able to discover ways to get over the fence and achieve your ambitions.

fence

skyscrapers
all eyes looking at the centre

henry aspires to havard business
and throws away his harmonica

jenny is driving a car
into her global spider networked future

jonah unfurls like a creased carpet
on the eighth floor to watch voodoo tv

someone is working on her tablet cv
on winning beans and influencing people

dorcas must pass her abrsm
she bangs on her piano or else her mother

skyscrapers, fence
all eyes looking
