'i – Journey' Paid Non-local Study Leave Scheme for Secondary School Teachers








      The Scheme aims to create a unique learning experience for participants, where they will start with an inquiry, get inspired in the process, and most importantly, bring an impact on their teaching/ student learning/ school development. “i” refers to the 3 crucial elements of this Scheme – inquire, inspire and impact, and together they make a fruitful learning journey.





  • Enhance teachers’ professional capacity and inspire them with the latest global education developments
  • Promote a culture of research and inquiry in schools that brings positive changes and impact on learning and teaching
  • Create space for teachers to undertake professional development activities on a full-time basis

Programme Structure      
  • Pre-trip preparation: a one-week period in Hong Kong for research and development of an initial school-based initiative/ research proposal
  • Overseas experience: five to six weeks of structured learning and school attachment abroad
  • Post-trip consolidation: a two-week period upon returning to Hong Kong for consolidation and finalising a detailed implantation plan and developing research/ teaching materials






Participating teachers will be entitled to:

  • Full-pay study leave, covering pre-trip, overseas experience and post-trip
  • Air passage
  • Course fees, including tuition and course materials
  • Lunch and local transportation (during school attachment only)


Participants’ schools will be entitled to:

  • Funding for employment of supply teacher(s) during participating teachers’ whole study leave period

Core requirements for both Programmes (Finland or Australia):

Application is open to full-time serving secondary school teachers who:

  1. are permanent residents of Hong Kong;
  2. hold recognised teacher qualification;
  3. are regular teachers in government, aided (including special schools), caput or Direct Subsidy Scheme secondary schools at the time of application; and
  4. have no less than 5 years (as at 6 October 2017) of full-time teaching experience in local secondary schools.


Additional requirements/preference:

  1. For Programme in Finland, past experience in developing cross-curricula learning activities/ project-learning or conducting education research on Learning and Teaching is preferred.
  2. For Programme in Australia, applicants should have completed at least 30 hours of structured training in catering for students with Special Educational Needs. Priority will be given to SEN coordinators and/or applicants responsible for supporting students with SEN in school.
