Speech at the Wah Yan Dramatic Society Presentation of Cantonese Opera in English at the 90th Anniversary of Wah Yan College Hong Kong

22 October (Thursday)

Wah Yan Dramatic Society

Presentation of Cantonese Opera in English at

The 90th Anniversary of Wah Yan College , Hong Kong

Speech by Mr Michael M Y Suen, GBS, JP

Secretary for Education

Fr Deignan, Fr Chow, Mr Yeung (Ka Pui), Mr Wong (Chin Wah), Mr Tam, Honourable Guests, Parents, Teachers, Alumni and Students,

It gives me great pleasure to be here with you this evening.

It is gratifying for me to be able to say that I am a member of the Wah Yan Dramatic  Society.  Although I am not on stage in the colourful costumes tonight, I am grateful for this opportunity to give public recognition to the Society which has brought the magic and humour of the Chinese theatre to the local non-Chinese speaking audience.

The all-star performance this evening brings together many generations of Wah Yan students over the years.  It is a showcase of their hard work and dedication in the past months.  As part of the fund-raising campaign for the School Development Project, the performance also demonstrates the tremendous support from the Parent-Teacher Association.  I would just like to pay special tributes to Fr Deignan and to Dr Patrick Wu for initiating and steering the School Development Project.  I would also like to thank all the donors for their generous contributions which has led to the successful completion of Phases I and II of the School Improvement Project.

The 90th Anniversary marks another milestone in the development of our Alma Mater.  With the strong foundation laid and the staunch support from all stakeholders, I am confident that the College will forge ahead with vitality and continue to excel in the years to come.

Lastly, may I extend tributes to all, on stage and behind, who have made it possible to bring us this special event.

I wish you all a joyful and memorable evening.  Thank you.
