Teacher Professional Development Programmes

Introduction

Gifted Education Section, Curriculum Support Division, Education Bureau (EDB) has been continuously offering professional support, including organising different series of teacher professional development programmes and Gifted Education School Network, to facilitate the implementation of school-based gifted education and equip teachers with the professional capacity to identify and nurture students with potential in various areas. In addition, The Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education (HKAGE), a subvented organisation of EDB, also organises thematic talks and workshops to help enhance teachers’ understanding of the grooming of gifted students.

Objectives of the Programmes

There are two main objectives:

  1. To meet the precise training needs of targeted key school stakeholder groups in Gifted Education
  2. To facilitate sustainable development of school-based gifted education and talent pool in schools

With the implementation of these professional development programmes, we strongly recommend schools to set up a school committee and assign senior staff to take up the following designated roles:

  • In order to ensure systematic development in school-based gifted provision, it is essential to have a holistic school planning including strategic programming and deployment of resources. It would be even more effective if a senior staff (e.g. principal, vice-principal or middle managers) can be tasked to take up this role.

  • In order to ensure coherence and effectiveness of school-based gifted provision, it is essential to closely monitor the development and implementation of gifted programmes. This can be accomplished by trained teachers who specialise in pedagogical issues, and who can act as drivers for innovative pedagogical approaches as well as to source the necessary resources.
