The school curriculum offers various platforms for students to learn about Cantonese opera. For example, in primary and secondary Music lessons, teachers guide students to appreciate Cantonese opera and use it as learning material to help them grasp key musical concepts. At the Senior Secondary level, the elective Music subject requires students to study Cantonese operatic music. In addition, students may also gain exposure to Cantonese opera as a performing art form through “Other Learning Experiences (OLE)”.
Students also have many opportunities to experience Cantonese opera through life-wide learning activities, such as attending community performances and participating in different Cantonese opera singing activities and competitions. Schools may also draw on various resources, including the Life-wide Learning Grant, the Quality Education Fund, and the Cantonese Opera Development Fund, to organise a wide range of Cantonese opera and Cantonese operatic singing programmes and activities.
In fact, the learning of Cantonese opera is not confined to schools. Given the nature and expressive form of this art, many children and young people also participate in training and learning programmes offered by Cantonese opera groups beyond schools.
