Project title  Promotion of English Reading through School Library Activities
Teachers involved  P.4 English Language teachers, P.E. teachers and teacher-librarian
External help  American Women Association (AWA)
Target students  P.4 students
No. of classes  2 classes
Focal points
  • To promote English Reading.
  • To enhance collaboration between the teacher-librarian and other subject panels.
  • To widen students’ reading horizon.
  • To enhance students’ reading confidence in English.
Programme details
  • Collaborative teaching among the teacher-librarian, reading partners from American Women Association (AWA) and English teachers was practised.
  • The teacher-librarian served as the coordinator for arranging meetings for the subject teachers and the volunteers of AWA to decide the reading themes and to design the reading activities.
  • Volunteers from AWA co-taught with the teacher-librarian in the library lessons. They helped the teacher-librarian to design worksheets, which enhanced students’ reading ability.
  • English Language teachers taught the subject contents and designed some tasks (a project and a drama) for the reading themes, which encouraged students to read more.
  • The programme was promoted in Friday Reading Assembly.
  • There were two stages in the programme:

    • 1st stage (October 2012) :
      • The reading theme was “Hobbies & Sports”.
      • P.E. teachers recommended sports magazines to students in Friday Reading Assembly for promoting reading related to “Hobbies & Sports”, while the teacher-librarian purchased and shelved the recommended magazines in the school library.
      • The English teachers recommended some e-stories in the E-book Platform in Friday Reading Assembly and English lessons. The interactive games and worksheets in the E-book Platform can arouse students’ interest in reading the stories.
      • In line with the reading theme, a group project titled “My Favourite Hobbies” was assigned to students when they were studying the module “Let’s have fun” in their English lessons. Students needed to present their projects in class and wrote a RAP song of their favourite hobbies after the project.
      • The teacher-librarian sourced books related to “Hobbies and Sports” from the school library collection and through the Block Loan Service of the Hong Kong Public Libraries. The books were then sent to the classrooms for students to read.
      • In the library lessons, the simplified version of the 3 sports books about “triathlon”, “horse riding” and “bobsled” were read. Worksheets (refer to appendixes 1, 2, 3) word were designed to guide students to comprehend the content of the books. Strategies such as games and repetition were used to arouse students’ interest in reading in the lessons. The teacher-librarian talked to the students to check their understanding in the latter part of the lessons. Students were encouraged to borrow books from the school library at the end of the lessons.
    •

    • 2nd stage (February 2013) :
      • The reading theme was “Fairy Tales”.
      • This reading theme was related to “Aladdin”, a chapter of the English textbook. Students needed to write the story ending and play a drama after studying the chapter.
      • The teacher-librarian sourced different versions of “Aladdin” and other Fairy Tales to support students’ learning. The books were then sent to the classrooms for students to read.
      • In the library lessons, some famous fairy tales such as “Yeh Shen” and “Jack and the Beanstalk” were read. Vocabulary was taught in advance to help students to understand the tales. Teaching strategies including games and questioning were used to arouse students’ interest in reading in the lessons. Students were encouraged to read other fairy tales at the end of the lessons.
