Physical Education - Surveys on Physical Fitness Status of Hong Kong School Students
Introduction
To formulate and optimise the scoring criteria for the “School Physical Fitness Award Scheme” (Scheme), the Education Bureau (EDB) will conduct survey studies as appropriate on physical fitness for primary and secondary school students (Fitness Survey) to update the norm information of various physical fitness tests, thereby providing reference indicators. Jointly-organised by the EDB, the Hong Kong Childhealth Foundation and the Physical Fitness Association of Hong Kong, China, the Scheme aims to promote regular participation in physical activities and enhance health-related fitness levels among primary and secondary students.
Methods
The Fitness Survey primarily adopts a stratified random sampling method to invite primary school and secondary school students to participate in physical fitness tests. The relevant test items include:
- Height
- Weight
- Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA)
- Skinfolds
- 1-min Sit-up
- Sit-and-reach
- 15-metre Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run (15m PACER)
- 6-min (for participants aged 8 or below) or 9-min (for participants aged 9 or above) run/walk
- Push-ups (Boys) or Bent-knee Push-ups (Girls) (for Secondary students only)
- Standing Long Jump (for Secondary students only)
- Handgrip (for Primary students only)

Remarks:
In alignment with the Hong Kong 2020 Growth References (HK2020) adopted by the Department of Health since 2024 (
https://www.dh.gov.hk/english/useful/useful_PP_Growth_Chart/files/growth_charts.pdf), the Fitness Survey has utilised this as a more appropriate tool to assess and monitor the growth of children and adolescents.
