Programme details

 P.5 students

 

  • Theme-based reading materials related to the English curriculum were used.
  • In the first semester, bilingual reading materials were provided:
    • students with higher English proficiency were encouraged to read the English versions and used the Chinese versions as reference;
    • students with lower English proficiency were encouraged to read the Chinese versions then the English versions.
  • In the second semester:
    • the class of lower English proficiency was provided with English materials supplemented with introduction in Chinese;
    • the class with higher English proficiency was provided with English materials only and were asked by the English teacher to write an essay related to the reading theme at the end.
  • Library lessons were scheduled for instruction of reading strategies and discussion of reading materials.

 

 P.2 students

 

  • In the 1st semester, thematic books related to the English curriculum were used. In the 2nd semester, series titles were introduced.
  • Bilingual materials were provided to parents and they were asked to read the Chinese version with their children at home before attending the library lessons.
  • During the lessons, the teacher-librarian taught the P.2 students reading skills and went through the English versions.
  • During the morning reading time, students were put into groups of 4 or 5. Each led by a "Reading buddy" from the upper forms. The buddies went through the English text with his/her group of P.2 students.
  • Approaching the end of the programme, Chinese versions were no longer provided.

 

 The programme was supplemented with large scale reading promotion activities. (refer to the
 activities in May 2013 under the implementation schedule)
