APASO-II - Examples of the Application of the APASO-II

In order to further promote the use of "Assessment Program for Affective and Social Outcomes" (APASO) and a culture of professional sharing among school personnel, our Bureau has collected some examples of using APASO to facilitate school development. These school cases will serve as a reference for other schools. We would like to extend our thanks to the following schools for chronicling their experience of applying APASO and granting their consent to post their cases in this webpage for other schools to download.

Through these school cases, the Bureau would like to introduce some applications of APASO to facilitate school improvement and development. In these examples, student performance changed after the schools had implemented corresponding follow-up measures which were devised by making reference to the survey results. These changes indicate schools could make use of APASO to perform self-evaluation effectively. However, as school circumstances vary, schools are advised to take into account factors such as their school context and background of students when making reference to these cases. Schools should also review their current practice and explore more effective ways of using the survey results in devising follow-up measures to cater for students' needs.

School Cases (Not in order of precedence)
1. Chai Wan Kok Catholic Primary School (PM)
Scale(s) chosenBrief introduction to the caseCase
"Attitudes to School"Through administering the scale "Attitude to School" and making reference to other qualitative information, the school had identified the development needs of its students and subsequently devised its school-based discipline and guidance activities and a series of corresponding measures. After their implementation for one year, the school administered the scale again to collect students' views and found that their views in the subscales "Social Integration", "Achievement", "Opportunities" and "Adventure" had changed positively. Hence this example shows that the school has effectively used APASO to formulate school-based programmes and follow-up measures.PDF

2. Tin Shui Wai Catholic Primary School
Scale(s) chosenBrief introduction to the caseCase
"Causal Attribution"The school had administered the scale "Causal Attribution" to collect students' views on their success and failure in school learning. Subsequently, the school had designed school-based "Moral and Civic Education" programmes according to students' needs, so as to enhance their learning strategies and self-confidence. In one year's time, students' academic achievement improved significantly; their learning attitude also changed. This result shows that the follow-up measures implemented by the school have taken effect.PDF

3. Buddhist Mau Fung Memorial College
Scale(s) chosenBrief introduction to the caseCase
"Attitudes to School" and "Self Concept"The school had designated a task group that was responsible for coordinating the use of APASO through a whole-school approach. The school had made use of the results of the scales "Attitudes to School" and "Self Concept" as the basis in the follow-up discussions. Accordingly, major concerns at both school and form levels were formulated, and corresponding follow-up measures were also devised. In the latest two school years, the performance of students had improved. Moreover, in the course of using APASO, the teachers had mastered the skills of doing data-oriented and evidence-based analysis. As such, student development needs could be identified systematically through professional dialogue and collaboration.PDF

4. Kwun Tong Government Secondary School
Scale(s) chosenBrief introduction to the caseCase
"Expectation on Jobs and Careers" and "Attitudes to Learning"By administering the scales "Expectation on Jobs and Careers" and "Attitudes to Learning", as well as making reference to other qualitative information, students' needs could be identified and proper student support measures were thus devised. According to the survey results, the school had strengthened students' careers education to enrich their knowledge about the job world. Moreover, after the school became aware of students' weakness in their learning strategies, all subject teachers worked collaboratively in formulating improvement measures. PDF
