Filial Piety for All – Act with Filial Hearts and Devotion Campaign

Webpage

With Mother’s Day and Father’s Day approaching, the Education Bureau (EDB) is organising the “Filial Piety for All – Act with Filial Hearts and Devotion” Campaign.  Schools are encouraged to design diversified and engaging activities to help students learn about the meaning of the priority value of “filial piety” and appreciate the love of their elders, family members and caregivers from a young age.  In the activities, students express their gratitude, care and respect through actions, manifesting the traditional virtues of honouring the elderly and promoting filial piety.  To this end, the EDB is providing a number of activity examples and collating relevant learning and teaching (L&T) resources for schools’ reference.  In line with the learning contents, schools may flexibly adapt and use these resources to plan school-based activities, creating a campus atmosphere conducive to the strengthening of family and familial ethos education, as well as fostering traditional family values both within and beyond the classroom.

Details

Schools may participate in the “Filial Piety for All – Act with Filial Hearts and Devotion” Campaign by planning and implementing various school-based activities from May to June this year according to the school features, students’ key stages, abilities and learning needs.  Examples of activities are as follows:

Activity Examples

Classroom activities

  • Integrate subject content (such as Chinese Language, English Language, General Studies for Primary Schools/ Primary Humanities, Citizenship, Economics and Society at junior secondary level, etc.) or learning themes (applicable to kindergartens) to teach students about famous Chinese classic quotes relating to filial piety.
    • Upper primary and secondary school students may write these Chinese classic quotes in calligraphy and present them to their parents or elders as a token of affection.  They can also post the activity on social media with photos and texts to share the cherished moments later.  Schools may flexibly adjust the activity design to cater for students’ class levels and abilities, such as using pen writing or including related English quotes.  Kindergarten students can read aloud some simple famous quotes.

    Life-wide learning activities

    • In line with Chinese Culture Day, Life-wide Learning Day, Cross-curricular Learning Day or Parent-Teacher Association events, engage students in activities like “Filial Piety Recipe Design / Healthy Snack Making Competition” or “Cooking Competition”. From the activities, students may learn to observe their family members’ preferences and care for their needs through small details in daily living, expressing gratitude by designing nutritious meals for them.
    • Engage all students to create traditional or eco-friendly crafts, such as paper cutting, Chinese knots, herbal mosquito repellent sachets or shadow puppets, etc. for their elders at home or in community centres, conveying love and respect.
    • Encourage students to make eco-friendly thank-you cards to express gratitude to their elders, family members and caregivers. Meanwhile, organise a campus song dedication event where teachers or students of the Campus TV Station broadcast students’ messages and song dedications during lunch breaks, recess or snack times (applicable to kindergartens), fostering a campus atmosphere of gratitude and filial piety.  After the event, students can give their cards to their family members as a token of gratitude.
    • Assign students to complete small filial tasks at home, such as giving massages, doing housework, assisting in taking caring of the elders or younger siblings, or cooking under guidance. Students can record their tasks by writing, photos or drawings, while teachers may guide them to appreciate the care and love from their elders in our daily life, thereby cultivating their respect and gratitude towards parents, elders, and various caregivers.
    • Organise school events related to filial piety or family unity, such as parent evenings, family days, elderly open days or community service days, enabling students to spend joyful time with their parents or elders.  Lead students to visit elderly homes in the community, design activities and performances for the elderly, or present handicrafts to convey care to the elderly or those in need, teaching students to practise “extend your respect for your aged parents to all the aged” as well as sharing their experiences with peers

To encourage schools to promote student participation in the activities, the EDB will provide 50 small gifts to each school that organises the “Filial Piety for All – Act with Filial Hearts and Devotion” Campaign as a reward for actively participating students.  Schools are requested to email the completed questionnaire (Chinese only) to cdomcne14@edb.gov.hk by 11 July 2025 (Friday) to report on the implementation of their school-based activities.

    Remarks:

    • The small gifts will only be made available to schools participating in the “Filial Piety for All – Act with Filial Hearts and Devotion” Campaign.
    • The small gifts will be available on a first-come-first-served basis while stock lasts.
    • The EDB will notify eligible schools of the arrangements regarding the redemption of the small gifts via fax by the end of July2025. Eligible schools should arrange to collect the small gifts at a designated location., mailing service will not be provided.
